Exfoliation: the secret to great skin forever.

Exfoliation is an integral step in your weekly skincare routine. You may think you can skip the scrubbing, but exfoliating gets skin smooth, soft and healthy-looking, and improves texture and tone.

What it comes down to is physical versus chemical. Physical exfoliation uses beads or an abrasive-style substance to literally help buff dead skin cells and impurities away. A chemical one involves applying products containing an acid- or enzyme-based formula that dissolves and removes the dead skin cells without harsh, manual scrubbing.

How often depends on skin type. Those with sensitive skin should start small and work their way up. Exfoliators prone to more oily complexions can probably get away more frequent sessions. By rule of thumb, individuals should incorporate exfoliation into their beauty regime once or twice a week, preferably in the morning. However, just as it is important to remove dead skin, it is also imperative not to strip away too many of skin’s natural oils. A good balance is essential to revived and hydrated skin.

Exfoliating can help combat signs of aging and give you a more youthful look. When old cells start to pile up on the surface of the skin, it can leave skin looking dull, rough, and dry. Ridding skin of dead cells encourages cell renewal -- the process by which your skin replenishes itself. Though our skin naturally sheds those cells, its ability to do it slows down as we age. Exfoliation is crucial to emerge the newer, plump skin cells that result in a fresh, youthful glow.

In addition to anti-aging benefits, exfoliation also helps your additional skin care products (like serums and moisturizers) perform at their best. By removing dehydrated and exhausted layers, you make way for a brighter, more even complexion and lay the foundation for an optimum skincare routine.

Whether your process consists of 10 steps or two, exfoliation is the one you can’t afford to skip.
