What is Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Fractional laser skin resurfacing is a non-invasive laser treatment designed to correct problems such as fine lines, wrinkles and sun damage. This treatment can improve the overall skin tone and texture, remove undesired pigmentation such as liver spots, and create younger and healthier looking skin overall.

How Do Fractional Lasers Work?

Fractional lasers send a series of highly precise light microbeams into the deeper layers of the skin. The process is called "fractional" resurfacing because only the smallest necessary fraction of the skin will get the laser light exposure. Multiple laser columns, so small that they are microscopic, are created at one time during the treatment. The column structure has been found to be the ideal way to prompt the skin to produce new skin cells (and healthy new skin along with them). Because the healthy areas of the skin are not affected by the laser, the cells in those areas help speed the healing for the treated areas.

How Many Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing Treatments Are Needed?

It depends on the patient and on the area being treated. The average treatment plan lasts between 4-6sessions. Treatment sessions are generally between 2-4 weeks apart to allow for full healing between sessions. A customized treatment plan can be created for each patient based on his or her skin problems and treatment goals.

When Can Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing Treatment Results Be Seen?

Results are often noticed quite quickly and will continue to improve over the course of treatment. The full effects of treatment are typically noticeable between two and three months after the first treatment. At this point, all damaged tissue has been repaired and the skin has had the opportunity to grow new healthy tissue. When treatment is complete, many patients say that they look years younger.
