MIcroneedling is a medical skin treatment focused on breaking down scar tissue such as acne scars and on repairing other skin texture issues. This treatment also has the significant side benefit of prompting the cells deep within the skin to make new collagen and elastin.
Microneedling is used as a treatment for many different skin issues, including stretch marks, toughened skin, acne scars, and fine facial lines. Microneedling can help with most skin texture problems and it can even minimize the appearance of large pores.
Prior to treatment, a numbing cream is usually applied to the treatment site. The microneedling tool is a small high-tech machine that resembles a writing pen. At the end of the device is a series of a dozen ultra-fine needles. These needles penetrate the upper skin layers during the treatment. The tiny holes created during the treatment prompt the skin to react by stimulating circulation and releasing white blood cells to repair the skin which breaks down the built-up scar tissue. The skin also begins creating new collagen and elastin, which helps plump up the skin, filling in small lines, scars, and pits. Following microneedling treatment, a soothing cream is applied to the treatment area.
There is no major recovery process with microneedling treatment. Patients can return to work or their usual routine once their treatment is complete. While skin may be mildly reddened and slightly swollen for up to a few days post-treatment, the after effects are no more severe than a mild sunburn. This redness can be covered with concealer if desired. Patients should protect their skin with a zinc-based sunblock if they are exposed to the sun during the days immediately after microneedling treatment.
