Mole Removal Q & A

What are Signs That a Mole is Cancerous?

The majority of moles are non-cancerous and will pose no problem throughout a person's lifetime. There are certain moles, however, that will begin to change in size, shape or color and give the doctor reason to be alarmed. When moles change shape and they are no longer equally balanced or if the border changes dramatically, a doctor may opt for a biopsy to see if the mole is cancerous. The color and diameter of a mole should also be closely monitored. Moles often change gradually making it difficult for a patient to notice all of the individual differences. In most cases, if a doctor notices any of these changes, they may choose to surgically remove the mole before they have it biopsied.

What is Involved in a Mole Removal Procedure?

Moles are removed for both cosmetic and health reasons. People may choose to have their moles removed simply because they don't like the way they look or where they are located. Others may need to have them surgically removed due to abnormal or cancerous cell growth. A doctor will thoroughly examine in the mole before the decision is made to remove it. If it is to be removed for cosmetic reasons, the doctor may choose to use a laser technique. When there is a risk of cancer, the doctor is more likely to surgically remove the mole as well as well as a small amount of the surrounding tissue to ensure all of the affected cells have been removed.

Will Moles Return Once They Have Been Removed?

Certain types of moles may begin to grow back even if it seems they were fully removed. While they may not have "roots" like warts, the presence of the cells that made up the mole can regenerate and cause new growth if left behind. When a mole is removed, there is no way of knowing if it will eventually grow back. It is common for moles that have hair growing around or out of them for the hair to grow back once the mole has been removed. Before having a mole removed for cosmetic reasons, it is important to talk to the doctor about any issues that might arise. It is also important to understand what techniques will be used during the removal process.
